The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction ("Kinsey Institute," "we," "our" or "us") has created this statement to describe its information gathering and privacy practices related to your use of the Kinsey Reporter mobile application ("Application"). We are sensitive to the private nature of information you provide to us through your use of the Application. This application privacy policy ("App Privacy Policy") is designed to maximize your ability to protect your personal information. Because this App Privacy Policy applies to any person who downloads, installs, or uses the Application, we strongly urge you to review this App Privacy Policy in its entirety. By downloading, installing, or using the Application, you accept and agree to be bound by this App Privacy Policy and any other applicable terms, and you consent to the processing of your information as set forth in this App Privacy Policy.


User Provided Information - The Application obtains the information you provide through the surveys presented by the Application. This information will include: survey responses; approximate date and time that the survey response is submitted; and the city, state/region, or country location that you designate when completing the survey. The Application does not collect or transmit detailed geolocation data from the GPS technology within your mobile device.

Automatically Collected Information - In addition, our authorized service providers may collect and temporarily store certain information automatically, including the IP address of your mobile device. We and our authorized service providers may receive such information and use it to operate and improve the Application and web site.


As a general matter, we use information collected through the Application to support the Kinsey Reporter platform. The Kinsey Reporter platform is designed to report, visualize, and analyze anonymous data about sexual and other intimate behaviors. This information may be used to share and explore sexual behaviors of people of various nationalities, ethnicities, beliefs, and experiences, contributing to research on human sexual behavior.

This program has been classified as research exempt from review by Indiana University's Institutional Review Board. Therefore, the data can be used for research purposes and shared without requiring formal informed consent from application users.


Survey results are made publicly available through the web site. Results may be viewed on the web site or downloaded from the website for offline use.

In addition to the disclosure of survey results on the web site, we may disclose your information:

  • As required by law, such as to comply with a subpoena, or similar legal process;
  • When we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, protect your safety or the safety of others, investigate fraud or respond to a government request;
  • With our authorized service providers who have agreed to adhere to the rules set forth in this App Privacy Policy;
  • If there is a change in ownership or administration of the Kinsey Institute or a portion of its assets; or
  • As otherwise provided in this App Privacy Policy.
The Application may use third party authorized service providers to provide us with non-personally identifiable analytical data about your use of the Application. Third parties that we engage to provide analytics services and to assist in providing the Application's tools and services cannot use your information for their own purposes, unrelated to the Application, without your explicit consent.


The Application may contain links to web sites and other applications that provide services related to the Application or that we believe you might find useful and informative. Please be aware, however, that we do not endorse or recommend the content or services of such web sites or applications, and are not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of these other sites. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of each web site and application you visit and use.


We will maintain appropriate safeguards to protect against the loss, misuse, and alteration of any information we collect from you. For example, survey responses are transmitted from your mobile device to through an encrypted connection. Nonetheless, please be aware that the transmission of information over wireless and wired networks is not inherently secure, and, although we endeavor to provide reasonable security measures, no security systems can prevent all potential security breaches.


The Application is not intended for children under the age of 18 and we do not knowingly collect information from children under the age of 18. If we learn that we have information collected from a child under the age of 18, we will delete that information.


The Application uses an opt-in model; it does not collect information when you are not using it. You can stop all collection of information by the Application by uninstalling the Application from your mobile device. You may use the standard uninstall processes as may be available as part of your mobile device or via the mobile application marketplace or network.


We reserve the right to change the terms of this App Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post any changes in the App and here:, so please check this periodically. Your continued use of the Application after any change has been posted constitutes acceptance of the change to this App Privacy Policy. If we make any revisions that materially change the ways in which we use or share the information collected from you through the Application, we will post those changes on the app or in a revised privacy policy.


Our services are primarily maintained in the United States. If you are located outside of the United States, the information you provide to us will be transferred to the United States, whose laws may not provide the same level of protection for the information collected by the Application as your home country. By using the Application, you consent to this transfer and to the processing of your information as set forth in this App Privacy Policy.
